Beachin’

Alrighty, GoGoMachRocketeers! Here it is- a little something I’ve been working on for the last week or so. I made it as a proof of concept for a way of combining my two hobbies: making music, and making comics!

These days, I haven’t been feeling much like making daily comic strips. Making comic strips is a source of joy to me when I’m in the right headspace. Usually my “writing workflow” goes something like this: I’m going about my day, something really bizarre or funny (or even completely normal but I think of it in a bizarre or funny way) happens, and I think “this would be a funny comic” and that evening, I draw it and post it. That’s fun! Because I love drawing and it’s nice to have something to draw. But Covid doesn’t have me in a “daily comic strip” headspace, and sitting around trying to think up something funny to draw doesn’t really help. I’d rather sit around and dream up other things, and so…

Covid DOES have me in a “making music” and “dreaming up stories” sort of a mood. way way WAY before I made charlie and the ghost and spacechuck and gogomachrocketsheep comic strips, I made youtube videos (which are lost to youtube time, I can’t find them) which were essentially slide shows set to music telling a story. I wish i could find them, just to see if I’ve gotten any better. But anyways, this video is a proof of concept for one iteration further than a music slideshow- a little animation, some still images, set to music, that tell a story that I have fun making. AND, I think more people are willing to watch a 3 minute video than are willing to sit down and read 3 minutes of comics.

Anyways, I hope you liked this video! Thanks for watching. spacechuck.com has short comic stories featuring the characters in this short movie! And if you like the song, I might put out a gogomachrocketsheep EP once I’ve got a few of these under my belts.

Getting old

We went to my brother’s show in Vancouver last night, and it was so great. We went with some good friends, and when we got there, A mini college reunion! It’s awesome, bumping into some of my oldest friends. There are people I saw last night that I haven’t seen since 2003, and people I haven’t seen since 2010, and good lord 2003 is almost twenty years ago. I’m at the age where I can say ‘oh man I haven’t seen you in twenty years.’

Anyway, Andy killed it as per usual, his band was so good, he played one of my favourite old songs for the encore. His level of musicianship in playing and singing and arranging really blows me away. I’m lucky if I take good enough notes during a rehearsal to remember what I told the band to do for an intro.

Anyways! I am quite tired. We got back into town around 1am and I think it was closer to 1:30 that we finally fell asleep. This comic will serve as a reminder that the next time Andy has a local show, I will need to nap for the entire day beforehand. Haha!

Totally worth it

Totally worth it, 100%. I learned early on in my musical career that, although I had rockstar aspirations, I didn’t have rockstar gumption. I think I’m musically above average, but I’m nothing to write home about.
That being said, I have enough musicality in me to inspire my kids to love music, and that mostly happens through singing stupid songs we make up on the fly. The one mentioned in this comic strip is 100% legit, just throw a line in about baby Jesus (I mean it’s Christmas after all) and bob’s your uncle.

honestly though, between comic making and music making, so far I share 2/2 interests with my daughters, and is there anything better than that?

Capo 3

I went to long and mcquade today to pick up a capo. This comic isn’t Actually much of an exaggeration, I’ve probably bought at least Ten capos in my life. People just borrow them, and they never get returned. Yeesh. And they’re expensive now! Like $25 for the sucky cheapos! Luckily they had a sale on the nicer capo that was going for $23, but still.
anyway, guitar players know that capos are like the mist…. you can see it for a while, but then it vanishes forever.

Music is good

I sat down last night to make a comic and had no ideas, other than the fact that the music we listen to can really colour everything we see. So I made that into a comic! 😉 have a great day!

The plight of the musician

2014-9-26Oh man.  I was thinking about getting back into song writing and recording and stuff… Drawing and music have always worked hand in hand for me… it’s nice to have something to switch out with, you know?  Anyways.  I got nominated for a bloggin’ award of some sort!  yay.  I don’t know how it works, I’m going to figure out how that all works tomorrow, so you can expect a saturday post, though it won’t be the norm!  Have a great weekend everyone!
