GoGo Weekly: Rabbits

This week, by popular request (and a bit of miscommunication) the subject of our drawing videos is RABBITS! And HARES! And Bucky O’Hare! This week I drew all three of these from references, because I don’t spend a lot of time imagining what a rabbit/hare/Bucky O’hare looks like and I needed a frame of reference. Which leads me to this little rant:

I’m teaching a comics making class at our community association, and one thing I realised in teaching that class is that the ability for a person to envision something in their mind’s eye, and then get it down on paper, isn’t a skill that most people THINK they have. “I can’t do that” they say, meanwhile they flawlessly draw Dog-man in ten seconds flat without ever stopping for a breath (because the ‘how to draw dogman’ instructions are at the end of those comic books). I’ve gotten so used to “sketch it, ink it, colour it” both in digital and real media that it’s second nature for me, there’s no question for me that I can draw anything (given enough time, and patience (which is where it gets a little touch-and-go))- but I was reminded at my comics class that it ISN’T second nature to most people. So here’s the thing: if you can see it with your eyes, you can train your mind to see it with your imagination. You can also train your hands to represent what you see on paper. The only way to learn this is to practice it over and over and over again. That’s basically what these ‘lets draw’ videos have been about since the very beginning: if you can see it or imagine it, you can draw it. There is no difference, you just need to develop the basic skills we constantly practice in these videos, and then you need to spend time on your art to make it look exactly the way you want. You get better as you go- but anybody (that wants to learn) can do it, I’m convinced of it.

These days, most of my creative output is being put towards my part time jobs (which I don’t think I’ll be able to share here, as it’s not technically mine to share) but at the beginning of the week I did manage to make some comics. Here they are:

I think the last one is one of the funniest HEROIC comics I’ve ever made.

Well, I think that’s it for now. Have a great week! Thanks for reading, and we’ll see yah next time!
